Listen up punks, most of your bosses are in their forties, fifties, and sixties – maybe even older! These men and women grew up with martini lunches, with typewriters, but most importantly, with the telephone! Texts and emails didn’t exist for the majority of your boss’ professional career. If you want to make a good impression or ask a favor, pick up the phone. Social interactions aren’t just for digital platforms. Phone and in person conversations create a different type of bond by utilizing this old-fashion vertical of communication. In a recent poll of young rookies in the workforce, seventy-eight percent of them reported their bosses declined to their request to take a Friday afternoon off when the request was sent via email or text message. However, eighty-eight percent reported that when they asked for Friday afternoon off over the phone, their request was granted. Ninety-two percent reported affirmative responses when they made the request face to face with their superiors. Emotion, sarcasm, and tone cannot be communicated through text in the same light as voice. Not to mention, it is also much harder for someone to say “no” when you’re standing in front of them. Pick up the phone, or better yet - walk over to your boss’ desk next time would like a favor and see how your fair. I’m sure you’ll hear "yes" more times than "no."
